Thermage vs. Ultherapy

Side view full length of beautiful woman in black swimsuit Thermage®  and Ultherapy® are similar noninvasive treatments that can help you tighten skin and minimize wrinkles without the downtime associated with surgical procedures. At Miami Skin and Vein, Dr. Shaun Patel utilizes both devices to treat different aesthetic concerns. If you’re wondering which treatment can help you achieve the look you want, it’s important to explore the differences between the two.

How Does Thermage Work vs. Ultherapy?

Both Thermage and Ultherapy use energy to stimulate collagen production, which decreases skin laxity and gives you a more youthful appearance. However, these in-office devices use different types of energy, giving each some unique benefits.

Thermage uses radiofrequency energy, while Ultherapy uses ultrasound energy. Because ultrasound energy can typically penetrate deeper into the dermal layer, Ultherapy could be a more suitable treatment for certain skin concerns.

What Do Thermage and Ultherapy Treat?

The choice between Thermage or Ultherapy typically comes down to which areas you want to treat. Ultherapy is used to tighten and lift the chin, neck, chest, and brow line. This makes it an excellent treatment option for:

  • Mild to moderate submental fullness (sometimes called a “double chin”)
  • Sagging cheeks and jawline
  • Loss of elasticity around the eyes
  • Drooping brows
  • Crepey skin on the neck

Thermage treats facial skin laxity and can address many of the same concerns as Ultherapy. However, it’s also used on larger areas of the body to firm and contour. This treatment is the better fit if you’re addressing issues like loose skin on the abdomen or cellulite on the thighs. While Ultherapy is used to lift the eyebrow, Thermage can actually be used to treat the delicate eyelid skin itself using an intraocular plastic shield.

Because there are subtle differences between these treatment options, a consultation is the best way to find out which is suitable for you. At Miami Skin and Vein, Dr. Patel will meet with you one-on-one to answer any questions and create an individualized treatment plan.
