Like many of our savvy Miami patients, you’re probably already taking steps to keep your face looking youthful. You’re loyal to your at home skin care routine, you wear sunscreen, and you’ve had a non-surgical treatment or two. Are you giving your neck the same attention?

This delicate and often-neglected area is one of the first places to show signs of aging. Like your face, your neck can experience cosmetic concerns such as volume loss, lines and wrinkles, laxity, pigmentation issues, and sun damage. An aging neck can make you look older despite the effort you put into your appearance.

The good news is that most of the effective treatments that we use on the face can be used on the neck as well. During your consultation, Dr. Shaun Patel will listen to your concerns and evaluate your skin to develop an individualized plan.

Vertical Neck Bands

The platysma muscle runs from the upper chest to the lower face. When this muscle contracts, it creates visible bands that run vertically along the neck.

These bands are dynamic, meaning they tend to look less severe when your neck is at rest. Over time, the downward pull of the muscle can also cause an undefined jawline.

To treat these concerns, Dr. Patel often relies on BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport®. These injectables help relax the platysma muscle. Then, the muscles in your upper face can work to lift the lower face and neck.

This approach is known as the Nefertiti Neck Lift. It restores a smooth and well-contoured appearance.

Horizontal Neck Lines And Volume Loss

Often referred to as “tech neck,” horizontal lines, folds, and creases are common cosmetic concerns. These lines are becoming more prevalent in younger patients who spend a significant amount of time on their phones with their necks hunched over. These lines can also form due to age-related volume loss.

Fillers can be administered to the lines to fill them in. In many cases, a softer filler like Restylane® Refyne is an ideal choice for this area.  Sculptra® Aesthetic can also be used to stimulate collagen production, restoring volume and thickening the skin.

Skin Quality

When treating the neck, it’s important to consider the overall quality of the skin in this area.

Just like in the face, your neck can have issues such as:

  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Redness
  • Textural irregularities and patchiness
  • Fine lines
  • Loose skin

IPL treatments are an ideal way to improve pigmentation and redness. They are a safe and effective method of color correction. When it comes to smoothing out uneven skin texture,

Sublative rejuvenation is a great option.

Microneedling and light fractionated CO2 laser treatments are also helpful. These services improve skin quality and stimulate fresh, healthy collagen.

How To Maintain Your Results At Home

In-office treatments can go a long way to improve the appearance of your neck. However, you may only visit our practice several times a year. Dr. Patel can help you fine-tune your at-home skin routine to create a daily defense against neck aging.

Ideally, your skin care products should include:

  • Antioxidants
  • Retinol
  • Moisturizers
  • Peptides such as the ALASTIN Skincare® Restorative Neck Complex
  • Sunscreen

Frequently Asked Questions

What Causes The Neck to Age?

Aging is a normal human process, however, many patients notice that signs of aging will appear first on their neck before their face, making the skin on the neck look much older or worn out than the rest of the skin on the body. This is partly caused by the time patients have spent in the sun over the years.

Exposure to the sun’s UV light can cause our skin to age faster, and with most people only applying sunscreen to the face and not their neck, signs of aging and sun damage can appear here first. Lack of sunscreen, as well as smoking, can also cause loss of elasticity, wrinkles, and age spots on the neck.

How Can I Prevent My Neck from Showing Signs of Aging?

Though it isn’t possible to completely prevent the process of aging, there are ways to minimize the appearance of signs of aging on the neck. These ways have been adopted by many people reporting that their skin looked younger for their age the earlier they started applying each action to their daily routines. These include:

  • Taking a collagen supplement to help boost skin tightness
  • Getting regular exercise
  • Use a Vitamin C Serum paired with sunscreen to reduce the effects of sun damage
  • Exfoliate the skin on your neck to avoid clogged pores and additional signs of aging

What Are the Benefits of Aging Neck Treatment?

Aging neck treatment can not only lead to the elimination of pigmentation, age spots, texture, unevenness, and loss of volume on the neck, but it can also help restore confidence in patients.

All the treatments that Dr. Patel offers at Miami Skin and Vein that are specifically targeted for aging necks are non-invasive, non-surgical treatments, offering patients long-lasting results with optimal comfort. If you’re ready to feel like your younger self again, it is never too late to begin your aging neck treatment journey!
