Overview of vein disease
"The small meshwork of red, blue, and purple veins that sit just beneath the skin are referred to as spider veins or telangiectasia. Varicose veins are those that have become enlarged, with a bulging appearance. Their twisted, raised appearance can look unattractive, and may cause frustration and embarrassment in addition to pain.
What causes varicose veins?
Any vein can bulge at some point. The reason varicose veins develop is that insufficient flow of blood back to the heart allows blood to pool in the problematic vein. Because varicose veins can eventually progress to chronic venous insufficiency, a more serious venous disease, the appearance of these enlarged veins can be alarming.
More than 30 million people in our country have varicose veins. However, statistics show that only 2 million patients currently seek treatment to eliminate these unhealthy veins. The low numbers indicate a misconception that varicose veins are merely a cosmetic concern. This is not the case.
Dr. Shaun Patel of Miami Skin and Vein offers patients the expert care they need to determine if and when problematic veins should be removed. Using extensive knowledge from his Harvard training and the latest diagnostic testing, Dr. Patel can assess the potential for venous insufficiency and provide the necessary medical care to prevent complications from varicose veins.
Do you have symptoms of varicose veins?
Most people can spot varicose veins and spider veins simply by their appearance. These veins typically develop on the feet, ankles, and legs, and may cause symptoms in addition to visible bulging. These include:
- A "heavy" feeling in the legs
- Easily fatigued legs
- Swelling in the ankle or leg
- Restless legs
- Achiness or cramping in the lower extremities, typically at night
- Ulcerated skin on the leg or ankle
- Changes to the appearance of skin or chronic rashes on lower extremities
Treating problematic veins
One of the reasons that many people may not seek care for varicose veins is because they perceive treatment to be invasive. On the contrary, most vein procedures performed today are non-surgical. We remain focused on patient comfort as we perform minimally invasive procedures such as sclerotherapy
to eliminate unhealthy veins. Most patients who receive vein treatment with Dr. Patel are back to their normal activities within just a few days.
