Benefits Of Dermal Fillers

There are many benefits to using fillers for facial rejuvenation, including safety, effectiveness, longevity, and versatility.

Dr. Patel commonly gets asked “Why should I get filler injection when I can get a facelift?” Here are several reasons why you should consider injectable treatments over a facelift:

Cost $2,500-$5,000 (full face) Cost $15,000-$30,000
Results last 1-3 years Results last 5-10 years
Reversible Permanent
Minimal to no downtime Long post surgery recovery
Nonsurgical Surgical
Subtle, natural looking results Results can look unnatural
No post procedure pain Significant post procedure pain

For younger patients, it is also important to note that by starting injectable treatments early, a patient can prevent signs of aging and postpone the need for surgical interventional indefinitely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are a type of injectable implant used in cosmetic treatment. When these products are injected beneath the skin, they can soften lines and wrinkles, correct age-related volume loss, enhance facial proportions, and optimize skin quality. They are made up of various substances, the most common being hyaluronic acid (HA). Restylane and Juvéderm are types of HA fillers. Other substances used to make dermal fillers are calcium hydroxylapatite, the key ingredient in Radiesse and poly-L-lactic acid found in Sculptra.

Understanding Your Filler Options

There are many fillers to choose from, and sometimes it can be difficult to determine which filler is right for you. Here are a few tips to point you in the right direction. Don’t worry, though, because Dr. Patel evaluates each of his patients in person, determines their specific cosmetic concerns, provides a list of recommendations, and creates a customized cosmetic treatment. He offers all of the latest FDA-approved dermal fillers and is always adding newer fillers to his practice as they are approved.

Dr. Patel was one of the first injectors in South Florida to offer Restylane Silk, Juvederm Volbella, Restylane Refyne, Restylane Defyne, Restylane Kysse and Restylane Contour soon after their initial FDA approval.

  • Belotero – Silky consistency for superficial lines and undereye dark circles and volume loss.
  • Juvéderm Fillers – These fillers are the most popular hyaluronic acid-based fillers. They are ideal for treating a range of aesthetic concerns including lines, folds, and volume loss. The Juvéderm family of fillers includes Juvéderm Ultra/ Ultra Plus, Juvéderm Voluma, and Juvéderm Volbella.
  • Microcannula – The technique to minimize discomfort and bruising from cosmetic injectables.
  • Radiesse – Tiny beads of calcium hydroxylapatite provide immediate volume, and stimulate on-going production of fresh collagen. Also works great for rejuvenating your hands!
  • Restylane Family of Fillers – Similar to Juvederm, Restylane soften lines and wrinkles. This is Dr. Patel's go-to-filler for the undereye volume loss, tear troughs, and dark circles. There are a variety of Restylane fillers such as Restylane Silk, Lyft, Defyne, Refyne, Kysse and Contour, each designed with their own unique purpose.
  • Sculptra – Poly-L-lactic acid is great for panfacial revolumization. It stimulates your body to produce it own collagen for gradual, long-lasting rejuvenation.

What Areas On The Face Are Fillers Used To Treat?

Dr. Patel is an expert in facial aesthetics. He uses advanced injection techniques based on years of training and experience and may inject areas on the face not typically injected by the amateur or untrained injector. Here is a list of areas he may address with fillers:

  • Cheeks/Midface – restore volume to the cheeks, lift the face, and emphasize the cheek bones
  • Corners of mouth – reverse the downturn of the corners of the mouth seen with aging
  • Frown lines – used in combination with Botox
  • Forehead lines – for deep lines on the forehead which Botox itself cannot completely treat
  • Hands – treat volume loss in the hands caused by aging; reduce appearance of veins and tendons in the hands
  • Jawline – sharpen the jawline and minimize the appearance of the jowls
  • Lips and perioral lines (lipstick lines, upper lip lines) – add volume to lips, hydrate lips, soften lines
  • Marionette lines – Soften the shadows below the corners of the mouth
  • Nasolabial folds – fill in smile lines
  • Neck lines – filler in “necklace lines” on the neck
  • Prejowl – treat the area of volume loss just in front of the jowl but to the side of the chin
  • Temples – treat the scalloped appearance of the upper face due to volume loss in this area
  • Undereyes – improve dark circles caused by volume loss and prominent tear troughs

    2. Aspirin
    3. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Aleve)
    4. Ginger

    7. Ginseng
    8. St. John's Wort

Following A Dermal Filler Injection, What Should I Do To Ensure Proper Results And Faster Recovery?

  1. For the first 24 hours after your filler treatment, apply an ice pack or ice wrapped in a cloth (avoid putting ice directly on your skin) to the treatment area to help reduce swelling.
  2. Avoid exercise or any other activities (sauna, hot tub, etc.) that may make your face red/flush for 24 hours after your treatment.
  3. You may start applying make-up 4 hours after treatment.
  4. Do not rub or massage the treated area for 24 hours following treatment unless you are instructed to do so. (Sculptra patients will be asked to massage the treatment sites after injection.)
  5. Avoid sun and UV exposure until swelling and redness have resolved. Proper sunscreen use is always important.

How Long Do The Results From Fillers Last?

Of course, it is important to remember that every patient’s body is different and every patient can respond differently to the fillers based on such factors as diet, exercise, baseline metabolism, sun-exposure, and smoking. In general, Dr. Patel recommends maintenance treatments so that the results never completely return to baseline.

He also recommends that all patients start an at-home skincare regimen to maintain their results. This regimen usually includes a combination of antioxidants, sunscreen, moisturizers, and retinol. View our skin care products for multiple medical-grade options.

General guidelines for filler longevity based on Dr. Patel's experience using these products for his own patients is as follows:

  • Restylane Silk – 4-6 months
  • Juvederm Volbella – 6-12 months
  • Restylane Refyne, Restylane Defyne – 9-12 months
  • Restylane – 9-12 months
  • Restylane Lyft – 9-12 months
  • Restylane Kysse – 9-12 months
  • Restylane Contour - 9-12 months
  • Radiesse – 9-12 months
  • Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm UltraPlus – 9-12 months
  • Juvederm Voluma – 9-15 months
  • Sculptra – 24 + months

A filler may last a longer or shorter duration on different parts of the face. For example, the lips tend to have lots of movement and so filler breaks down faster. The undereyes, cheeks, and temples have less movement and so filler injected in these parts of the face usually last longer.

The times listed above may differ from what the individual manufacturers (Allergan, Galderma, Merz) have on their own websites or literature. The times listed above are what Dr. Patel believes to be accurate based on his own experience having treated thousands of patients with fillers.

To learn more about the different factors that determine how long a filler last, please refer to Dr. Patel's recent blog post on filler longevity.
